Luxury Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech

Day 1: FES to MIDLET to MERZOUGA

Collecting you from your hotel, or from the airport, we wave goodbye to Fez, leaving behind the scents and sounds of this chaotic, ancient city that is unlike any other. Our destination is SAHARA LUXURY CAMPS, deep in the Sahara. The journey goes through the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains, passing by some of the most beautiful stretches of cedar and Hazelwood forests. The scenery begins to change in the towns of Azrou and Ifrane, both popular for winter sports, and known as "the Switzerland of Morocco." Yes it snows in Morocco! We stop for lunch in Midelt and then proceed to Merzouga before we let our tyres down and free-wheel across the dunes to arrive at camp. On the way we spy the immense dunes of Erg Chebbi, near the oasis of Merzouga. If you are lucky, you’ll spot an oasis or perhaps you'll notice a desert fox. At camp, there will be time for a camel ride to find a sunset before we dine in the light of the open fire, so we don’t miss a second of the spectacle of a night desert sky. Before you sink into the comfort of your five star luxury accommodation, in your individually-styled tent, why not reach out and touch the Milky Way?

Day 2: MERZOUGA to BOUMALNEDADES to KALAA'TMGOUNA

Just like our nomad friends, who you will wake at dawn to see the sun paint its shape across a vast sky as it rises between a sea of sand waves, with a mist of sand; ever rolling, ever shaping and changing the layout of the desert. It's this scene that has inspired writers and photographers for centuries. Now it's your turn to be inspired and mesmerized. The chaos of the world ends in the heart of the desert. This is where you'll find your peace and quiet, realign your chakras, and be one with your universe. We encourage those who love yoga, to bring yoga mats. For those who meditate, the stillness of your environment will be music to your ears. On our way to KALAA'TMGOUNA we will take the 4x4 to the village of Khamlia. This black village was once a place for the trade of black slaves. We will enjoy music and dance, and the hospitality of Moroccan tea, then head to the Todra Gorge - a town in the heart of the mountains with a stunning canyon that stretches all the way to the Atlas Mountains. There will be time to walk in the valley of Todra, and afterwards, lunch on top of the canyon. After the ritual of Moroccan tea, we will visit a Berber family who live in the stunning caves of the Atlas Mountains. Then, to Imilchil, where we will find beautiful lakes stretching for miles. Our overnight stay and dinner will be in a typical Berber hotel.

Day 3: KALAA'TMGOUNA to OUARZAZATE to MARRAKECH

After breakfast in our hotel, we will take the scenic route back to Marrakech - the city  protected by seven saints and a12 kilometer wall that dates back to the time of the Almoravid Dynasty. To reach the city, founded in 1062, we pass through Ouarzazate - the ancient caravanserai.  We will take lunch at one of the largest and most famous caravans of all Morocco. Here you can make purchases of arts and crafts, jewellery, rugs, furniture and antiques brought in directly from the artisans themselves. The history and culture of Morocco can be told in every piece lovingly sourced and exhibited at the caravan. Our host is charismatic and you will enjoy the theatre. The area is also called the Hollywood of Africa, because of the film studios and sets used for movies like 'Gladiator', 'Babel's Feast,'  'Black Hawk Down', 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'The Jewel of the Nile', 'The Sheltering Sky', 'Cleopatra', 'The Mummy'... and many, many more.  Time permitting, we can visit some of these sets and Ait Benhaddou - the Ksar World Heritage Site protected by UNESCO. Moving on, we will cross over the High Atlas by the Tizi n' Tichka Pass to a height of 2,260 meters above sea level.   The fortified villages set into the mountains  are reminders of the ancient salt caravan trail marking the route through the Atlas to Marrakech. The mountainare are a rainbow of colours with the dark green of conifers and palms, and the pinks and white of oleanders and a landscape of red earth and craggy rock faces. By late evening we will arrive in Marrakech and deliver you safely to your hotel or airport.
